Biological Source:- It consists of dried fully ripen fruits of the plant Tribulus terrestris Linn, belonging to family Zygophyllaceae.


Chemical Constituents:- The drug contains trac of alkaloids harmine and harman. Additionally, they contain saponins, which on hydrolysis yield steroidal sapogenins like diosgenin, gitogenin, chlorogenin and ruscogenin. The roots and leaves also contain saponin. Flavonoids, kaemferol, tribuloside and its derivatives have also been isolated from the leaves and fruits. Fixed oil (3.5 %), resin, traces of essential oil and nitrates are the other constituents of the fruits. Fatty oil possesses excellent drying propertiesThe dried fruits of Pedalium murex (Pedaliaceae) are known as ‘Bada gokhru”. The plant is found on sea coast of India. The fruits conain fatty oil, mucilage, an alkaloid and resin.
Uses:- Fruits are used as diuretic, tonic and also in the treatment of calculous affections and painful micturition. They are also used as aphrodisiac and in gout. Gokhru is a common ingredient of ayurvedic preparations, Dashamoolarishta and Chyavanprash. ‘Bada gokhru’ is used as a diuretic and in dysuria and gonorrhoea.
