Synonyms:- Hydnocarpus oil, Gynocardia oil.
Biological Source:- Hydnocarpus oil is fixed oil obtained from ripe seeds of the plants Hydnocarpus onthelminitica Pierre, Taraktogenos kurzil king Hydnocarpus heterophyllo Kurz and other species of the Hydnocarpus, (Family, Flacourtiaceae) prepared by cold expression method.
Method of preperation:- Chaulmoogra seeds contain 40-45 % foed oil Seeds are decorticated by machine after grading. The kernels are pressed with hydraulic press and oil is filtered.
Chemical Constituents:- It contains esters of cyclic unsaturated fatty acids, viz. chaulmoogric acid (27%) and hydnocarpic acid (48 %) and glycerides of palmitic acid.
Uses:- The cyclic unsaturated fatty acids of chaulmoorgra oil possess strong bactericidal effect. against Mycobocterium leproe and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is found useful in the treatment of T.B. leprosy, psoriasis and rheumatism. It is intended only for external use.
